US greenlights second commercial-scale offshore wind project

The Department of Interior has approved the construction and operation of the South Fork Wind project offshore New York.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s issuance of the record of decision concludes the environmental review of the project.

South Fork Wind will be located about 35 miles (56 km) east of Montauk Point, New York. Its transmission system will deliver energy directly to the electric grid in East Hampton.

The project remains on track to be fully permitted by early 2022. The joint venture partners Ørsted and Eversource will ramp up construction activities soon after on the 132-MW offshore wind farm which will serve Long Island. It is expected to power about 70,000 New York homes.

Operations are expected to begin at the end of 2023.
