Russian Black Sea well finds prospective carbonate structure
Rosneft and partner Eni have completed drilling of the – exploration and appraisal well Maria-1 on the Zapadno-Chernomorskaya licence area in the Russian sector of the Black Sea.
Water depth at the site was 2,109 metres (6,919 feet), while the final drilling depth was 5,265 metres (17,273 feet).
According to Rosneft, the well discovered a carbonate structure with a 300-metre (984-foot) gross interval: this comprises a fractured reservoir which are thought likely to contain hydrocarbons.
The company plans a comprehensive analysis of the geology and the retrieved well samples and to continue exploration and appraisal works on the licence area.
Preparations for this initial well on the licence included acquiring 4,000 kilometres (2,485 miles) of 2D and more than 3,000 square kilometres (1,158 square miles) of 3D seismic, along with other engineering and geological studies.
