North Sea OBN survey could be extended

CGG and Magseis Fairfield have completed acquisition of what they claim is the largest ocean bottom node (OBN) survey ever acquired in the North Sea.

The OBN Cornerstone 2020 multi-client survey, in the UK central sector, got under way in March.

In total, the duo acquired around 1,650 sq km (637 square miles) of long-offset, full-azimuth data. They expect to have first images available early next year and final PSDM data in 4Q 2021.

They are also considering further extensions of the survey, which currently covers two prospective areas.

The survey addresses issues associated with imaging deeper, higher-risk Jurassic and Triassic plays (typically under HP/HT conditions), and complex structural processes associated with Permian salt movement.

According to CGG, application of full-azimuth imaging, additional fold and near-offset data should significantly improve deep illumination and noise removal, also helping to illuminate and image the steep flanks and complex architecture created by salt diapirs.
