Madagascar to stage roadshows for licence round

State oil company OMNIS expects to stage roadshows in Houston and London next month to promote Madagascar’s licensing round, launched last November.

On offer are 44 offshore blocks in the Morondava basin on the western margin of Madagascar.

Exploration in the island began in the early 1900s with the discovery of hydrocarbon-rich sedimentary basins in the west, including the Tsimiroro heavy-oil field and the Bemolanga tar sands.

The offshore basins remain largely unexplored, but the country shares a maritime boundary with Mozambique, where large volumes of natural gas have been discovered in deep-water off the north coast.

Studies of new data, in collaboration with TGS and BGP, suggest there is significant potential for future discoveries offshore, OMNIS said.

The round will remain open until the 30th May and will be followed by a three-month award period.

Existing seismic and well data are available for viewing at TGS’ offices in London and Houston.
