Australian state to allow conventional onshore gas drilling from 2021
The state of Victoria said on the 17th March that it would lift a ban on onshore conventional gas drilling from 2021 as it looks to boost local gas supply, in a controversial move which came earlier than expected.
‘The decision follows three years of detailed investigation by the Victorian Gas Programme, which found an onshore conventional gas industry would not compromise the state’s environmental and agricultural credentials,’ the government said in a statement.
The state barred onshore conventional drilling in 2014 and extended the moratorium in 2017 to June 2020, at the same time as it permanently banned fracking and all coal seam gas exploration.
